Bikram Yoga Capital Area is an independently-owned school of yoga and human potential in the Ghosh-Bikram Yoga lineage, a 45-year-old therapeutic hatha yoga tradition that improves athletic performance and has been proven to cure many chronic diseases, relieve chronic pain, improve cardiovascular & respiratory health, and restore mobility, flexibility, circulation, strength, and energy.

At Bikram Yoga Capital Area, we have regular students of all ages, from 6-80+. We have students who have gone from the couch directly to Bikram Yoga, and professional athletes who incorporate Bikram Yoga as their cross-training program of choice.  Bikram Yoga is also especially accessible to and effective for bigger bodies, with all modifications suggested as necessary for each individual.

At BYCA, you will be encouraged, challenged, and supported.

When attempted with precision, consistency, frequency, and focus, the 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises of Bikram Yoga use the tourniquet effect to move fresh, oxygenated blood throughout every tissue in the body.  Typical results include:

What about the heat?

Bikram Yoga is the Original Hot Yoga! The heat is your friend, and it helps make this unique method of yoga the most effective in the world.

We find that those with heat intolerance and even menopausal symptoms adjust with regular practice (at least 3 classes per week for one month). Students are invited to acclimate by attending our warm classes or sitting still in the room for a few classes before trying the postures.  It is extremely important that you do not try to do everything in your first few classes and then blame the heat for the difficulty!  You may miss out on the most important and transformative experiences of your life.

Bikram Yoga has been found to be most beneficial when practiced at a room temperature slightly above body temperature (105ºF), 40-45% relative humidity, and well-regulated oxygen/CO2 ratios. We keep our yoga room environment at this ideal range, with constant monitoring by instructors and computer sensors.

I would like to personally welcome you to the community at Bikram Yoga Capital Area.  Since 2003, I have used this yoga system to heal from broken vertebrae, anxiety, imbalanced blood sugar, sciatic pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, an eating disorder, joint pain in pregnancy, and many other issues.  I have tried many types of yoga and have enjoyed them all, but I have never found any other method that addresses so many health issues at once, and which is accessible and effective during times of injury, pain, and immobility.  I know all students by name and work with each one personally to guide them to their optimum state of health and wellness.

  • "The Yoga Formerly Known as Bikram" . . . . . . 
So this is my slightly sassy response to all the chit chat in politically correct North America about how we can't or shouldn't call it Bikram Yoga anymore.  I made this drawing about 3 years ago - with a Sharpie and a Post-It note - when everyone was upset about all the same stuff they are upset about again (or at least making a big PR deal about again...). It has been in my desk drawer since that time, in the same exact spot.

P.s. I love Prince and his thinking and artistry.  This is not a comment on his intentions, actions, or context.

P.p.s. In the case of "The Yoga Formerly Known as Bikram", I think all the skirting around saying the B-word does absolutely nothing to improve issues of gender and power in our culture, which is what those who want to disappear the name are supposedly hoping to do... .
P.p.p.s. Practicing Bikram Yoga at an independently-owned yoga school run by someone who creates a very safe space for everyone - this absolutely supports women (and men) in improving their own health and empowerment and boundaries.

P.p.p.p.s. I am still calling my school Bikram Yoga and our practice Bikram Yoga.  How many thousands - MILLIONS!! - of people are out there who still need to find this practice....who haven't even heard of it yet?  We need to connect them with the 90-minute prescriptive yoga, and I feel deeply that it is important they know what they are getting.

P.p.p.p.p.s. Since when does trying to forget history help us learn anything?  It comes across like trying to ban a book.  May we not speak the name nor credit the work of any genius, artist, or scientist if they have transgressed something important?

Recently, with more and more seemingly miraculous stories of healing from Bikram Yoga, many people around me have been asking:

What do you think it is that makes this yoga work? 
Is it the heat? (No, because you can heat up anything and it doesn't work like Bikram.) Is it certain postures? (Yes, but is all of them in combination.) Is it the concentration? (Well sure, but it is more than that.) Is it the breathing? (Again - yes, but it is breathing in the heat and in the specific postures.) Is it the stillness? (Absolutely, but not totally, because sitting still for 90 minutes in your house does not have the same effect!) Is it the straightforward dialogue? (Definitely that gets the mind in line with the body and the present moment...but you also breathe...and move the body parts...and look in the mirror...) This combination of things that makes up Bikram Yoga is simply amazing.  Although we can talk about it's different parts for intellect's sake, we DO IT in its combination, in its wholeness. 
Because a human life is whole, we must work with it and - allow it to heal - as a whole.
